Fans of legendary Nitro madman Smax Smith will be pleased to hear that after something a barren spell (last year was the first season in 34 years of drag racing that Smax didn't have a drive - he was so stressed he had to build himself a supercharged altered...), drag racing's most flamboyant leadfoot is back in Top Fuel. Now living in Canada, Smax has secured a spot with long-standing family team Leverich Racing, who recently entered the Top Fuel ranks, for drives at his local tracks of Grand Bend and Cayuga this summer. The team are based in Michigan in the States, so a successful initial inauguration could lead to more drives in the future. Smax tells us, 'They're a great up-and-coming team, fully committed, and I'm looking forward to working with them and progressing the car. So far they're running consistent mid-fives without breakages, so it's a solid baseline to start from.' Then he breaks into his usual grin - 'Hell, they've even got a five-plate clutch - I'm definitely moving up in the world...'

Just like buses all coming at once, just as the Leverich deal was confirmed, Smax also got offered a Top Alcohol drive at the same meeting. But two cars at once seemed like a bit of a big ask even for Smax... UK fans shouldn't feel like they're missing out though, there are strong rumours of Smax letting rip over here in Blighty next year too. And in something quick enough to befit his spectacular talents. It's too early in negotiations to confirm any details yet, but watch this space...
